Steven Gilpin, LMSW, Director
I started my career working with the LGBTQ+ community and individuals that were living with HIV in Detroit. Since then, I have worked in many environments including a large LGBTQ private practice, a partial hospitalization program, a few dialysis centers, and my own private practice. I have training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TFCBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), the Ziggurat Model, Exposure Response Prevention (ERP), ego-state therapy, and other evidence based models. I understand that not all interventions can be utilized like they were in research environments and will work to tailor these interventions to the needs of each person I see.
I attempt to step into interactions assuming that people react based on their past experiences and I try to help people feel sufficiently safe to talk about and process how those experiences play a role right now. I find it important to think about the concepts of power and control in therapy and how our early life experiences can affect how our brains navigate the present and how we think about the future. I will prioritize your needs and will cocreate goals that directly reflect what you feel you, your relationship, your family, or group I am working with see as important. I find metaphors to be powerful and want to help you find tools to build a meaningful life rather than put a band-aid on the current problem.
I am an Ann Arbor local that was born, raised, educated, and currently live in the Ann Arbor area. I love to spend time with my family, play with my dogs, journal, draw, watch tv shows and movies, renovate my home, knit, and occasionally go for a run or ride my bike.
